July 25-29: the Vermont Mastectomy and Breast Cancer Massage Workshop. Taught by Cheryl Chapman and George Glass, Thirty therapists will be trained in specialized techniques for working with breast cancer patients and survivors. Free tuition with a $95 charge for food and books. Covered in the workshop will be: an overview of cancer; indications and contraindications; the physiological, social and emotional aspects of breast cancer and breast surgeries; a review of anatomy, physiology and the lymphatic system relating to the breast; information on surgeries, including augmentation, explanation, implants and reduction. Also covered will be appropriate and effective massage techniques, demonstration and hands-on practice. Therapists will also learn marketing strategies and legal issues necessary to build and maintain a practice. The event workshop also offers: interviewing techniques, post event technique overview, post event cramp management and hyper and hypothermia. Eligible to attend the workshop is any professional massage therapist who is either NCTMB or a graduate of a 500-hour massage therapy program and/or any allied health professional with comparable training.
